What is WAP?
Such a small word yet such a big important meaning, WAP is short for Wireless Application Protocol. With this secure specification we can access information with our mobile phones, pagers, two-way radios, smart phones and communicators. WAP supports most of the wireless networks that we know like GSM, CDMA, TDMA and IDEN, and also supports all of the operating systems.
In simple words, WAP is an application that uses wireless communication and allows us to access the internet from our mobile devices. A WAP browser provides us with all the basic services like a regular PC browser, only a little bit more simplified so it is can operate with the restriction of a cell phone. WAP sites are web sites that are written in WML (Wireless Markup Language) and accessed via a WAP browser.
Before there was WAP, cell phone service providers were very limited with what they could offer for interactive data services. Today with WAP, we can enjoy many interactive data services like email with a cell phone, up-to-date sports results, latest news headlines and, best of all, downloading music. WAP was first founded by Nokia, Ericsson, Phone.com (formerly Unwired Planet), and Motorola. The WAP forum is now includes over 200 members including operators, infrastructure suppliers, software developers and content providers.
