Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) 2 become cell phone?
Sony Ericsson claims that nothing is imminent; but they just filed for a U.S. patent concerning a cell phone/video game hybrid. A joint venture between the Japanese electronics company Sony and the Swedish cell phone Ericsson; what the device would be if it does actually exist is a Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) cell phone; taking advantage of the PSP’s existing brand name recognition.
But is making a cell phone PayStation Portable even a good idea? The way I assume it would work is similar to the way many high end music phones function; where the video game would automatically pause when you’re receiving a call. Which sounds great in theory; except as anyone who plays video games knows; there’s nothing more annoying than getting interrupted in the middle of a game. You don’t want to answer the phone call; you want the irritating person to be put on call waiting until you finish the level.
Unless your playing multi player or something; video games aren’t about wanting to communicate, they’re about wanting to be left alone.

It is a good idea, but it could fail completely and utterly. The biggest difference between a PSP and a good smart phone these days is not technological. It wouldn't be too hard to just take the existing PSP, and make it 3G.
It would likely die in the details though. The IPhone will live and die based on how Cingular prices it, markets it, etc. Few people can or will switch their cell phone carrier for a phone...
However, you have little choice but to partner with a carrier if you want success in the states.
If their smart, they'll offer limited exclusivity to a carrier like Sprint, then every 3 months offer the product on a new carrier.
Of course that's true of any cell phone. For a PSP phone, in theory the money will be made of selling content, in this case games. It'd have to be backwards compatible with the PSP.
However the killer new feature would be digital download, of casual games, games you don't mind getting interrupted while playing. Things like you see on XBox live. I'm picturing Settlers of Catan.
