Should Palm switch to Google Android on their phones?

Palm, which is fast becoming the ugly stepsister of smart phones is set to roll out a new operating system in 2009 - but should it?

CNN Money Online just wrote an interesting article about why Palm would be better off just junking their OS, and starting over again with Android.

Here are the main points:

  •  Palm can't really compete with Blackberry or iPhone OS in terms of buzz factor but by using Android, they can get some of Android's buzz to rub off on them.
  •  Android is open source and meant to be modified, meaning Palm can still use it and retain it's branding and a unique look.
  • The main reason to create your own OS, is because it's cheaper than having to license someone else's; Windows Mobile costs between $8-15 per handset for instance. However if Android is already free, there's no longer any added value in creating your own

These are all valid points, however until Palm can come up with an application, feature, or service that's unique to them, they're market share will continue to spiral downward. Android is a band aid, not a solution.
