American Idol season 6 final: highlights

The final American Idol episode of 2007! And as after 6 years American Idol the producers were finally able to clear Beatles songs, so that became the night's unofficial random theme.

If it drives Jordin nuts now how everyone constantly refers to her being "just 17", think how nuts it's going to make her ten years from now when people are still doing it. Great song selection though. Aside from the fact he seems to be auditioning for a traveling production of the musical Grease, this performance is all about Blake... he's even singing better than Jordin. Nice to see producers give him a favorable song selection AFTER the voting's closed.

The Beatles medley was the real highlight of the broadcast; a great opportunity to compare and contrast the last five years of Idols winners (except of course Fantasia). Kelly Clarkson gives the best performance and is straight up rocking; Carrie Underwood, was good but usually is usually better; even when mediocre there's still her physical beauty to distract you. Ruben Studdard might have been out of the spotlight of late but he can still flat out sing, and Taylor Hicks? Nice enough guy, but by far the weakest voice of any Idol winner and the strangest facial ticks.

Doug E. Fresh! Hip Hop! The Inspector Gadget theme song! No one looked like he was having more fun last night than Blake Lewis, who correctly assuming he wasn't going to win and felt free from any pressure. In fact, he was even going to wear a "Vote for Jordin Sparks" t shirt Tuesday night if the producers would have let him. The only thing missing from this performance is a cameo from Michael Winslow from Police Academy.

Joe Perry and Sanjaya? This needs to be investigated; does Joe Perry have teenager daughters; did he lose a bet; is this some perverse form of community service? Of team ups we inexplicably didn't see; they couldn't haul out Hanson to do MMMBop with Jordin Sparks? Or have a diva-off between Lakisha Jones and Jennifer Hudson on that Dreamgirls song? Hudson was already sitting in the audience! Or even just Justin Timberlake coming out to goof on Chris Richardson's "nasely" singing.

Sigh... maybe next year.
